Gary Lineker has tweeted his honest opinion after Ronaldo wins UEFA's latest award

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stunning overhead kick for Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final clash with Juventus.

The home fans in Turin immediately applauded Ronaldo and the 33-year-old joined the Italian champions this summer.

On Tuesday, the memorable overhead kick won UEFA’s Goal of the Season for 2018.

"It was in my opinion one of the best goals of my career so far," said Ronaldo, as per Goal.

"And, of course, when the people started to applaud me in the stadium I was like, ‘wow'.

"It surprised me a lot because this has never happened in my life, so it was an unbelievable moment."

Ronaldo's strike claimed almost 200,000 of the 346,915 votes cast on UEFA's website, finishing well clear of Marseille's Dimitri Payet in second.

It's no secret that the Match of the Day host is a firm believer that Lionel Messi is the greatest player of all-time.

And Gary Lineker shared his controversial opinion on Twitter after Ronaldo claimed UEFA's Goal of the Season award.

He tweeted: "Wonderful goal though it was, it wasn’t even the best overhead kick in the Champions League, and @GarethBale11’s was in the final."

Lineker might have a point - but his tweet was always likely to cause a stir.

Gareth Bale scored a stupendous overhead kick in Real Madrid's Champions League final victory over Liverpool.

With the scores level at 1-1 in Kiev, the Welsh winger produced a breathtaking overhead kick to give Madrid the lead.

Remarkably, Bale's goal didn't even make UEFA's top three.

"It has to be my best goal," said Bale. "In a Champions League final, there is no bigger stage."

Ultimately though, UEFA allowed fans to cast their vote and Ronaldo is a far more popular global figure than Bale.

Ronaldo succeeds his new Juve colleague Mario Mandzukic, who won the award last year for his goal against Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
