Champions League: Edinson Cavani hits back at Premier League claims after Liverpool defeat

EDINSON CAVANI has rubbished claims that Ligue 1 is worse than the Premier League.

He made the comments in the aftermath of PSG’s 3-2 defeat to Liverpool in their first group stage match of the Champions League.
He pointed out that many of France’s World Cup-winning squad play in the French league, and therefore the standard must be high.
Of the 23-man squad that played in the UEFA Nations League matches against Germany and Holland, just nine played in Ligue 1.
Cavani appeared disgruntled after the late defeat, and explained that there are no problems with the league.
The best teams in Europe play in the Champions League and when you face them, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose,” he said.
“I would like to see Premier League teams play in Ligue 1 so we could see how good they are.
“I wouldn’t disparage the French league, as France are the current world champions and many of their players play in Ligue 1.
“French teams have been playing in the later stages of the Champions League in the last few years. So I just think, this is football. It is what it is.”

The Parisians suffered heartbreak in the last minute as Roberto Firmino popped up on the edge of the box and hit a beautiful strike into the bottom corner.
Daniel Sturridge had put the Reds 1-0 up early in the game and James Milner doubled the lead from the spot just minutes later, before Thomas Meunier levelled for the visitors.
The game seemed destined for a draw with ten minutes to play as Kylian Mbappe finished smartly after Neymar was gifted the opportunity to run at the defence by a sloppy Mohamed Salah pass.
Yet, in the last minute it was Firmino who won the game for the hosts, a result which leaves the Parisians with it all to do in the group.
PSG have to play Red Star Belgrade, and Cavani's old team Napoli, who played out a 0-0 draw in Serbia, in their other group matches.
